Works under supervision

Liverpool Hearing Centre has carried out earwax removal on Rodney Street in Liverpool since 2014. The appointment is led by an HCPC registered audiologist and includes an ear health check as standard, using an ENT microscope, a video otoscope and tympanometry rather than a quick look with a suction tip. If the check finds something other than wax, a written report with ear-canal photographs can be sent to your GP, and hearing, tinnitus and balance assessments can be arranged in the same building.

Services available at this clinic

Loupe/O-Scope microsuction

Vision-aided suction using surgical loupes or an otoscope. A widely-used technique suitable for most earwax removal.

ENT Microscope microsuction

Vision-aided suction using a binocular microscope, the technique most commonly used in hospital ear departments. High magnification and depth perception, useful when wax is impacted or close to the eardrum.

Water Irrigation

Warm water flush using a controlled-pressure pump. Suitable when wax is soft and the eardrum is intact.

Manual removal (curettes)

Hand instruments such as curettes, fine forceps, or a Jobson Horne probe. Useful for stubborn wax, foreign objects, or patients who prefer not to have suction.

Hearing assessments

Full diagnostic hearing tests with clinical audiometry, available in-house if the ear check points to a change in your hearing.

Tinnitus consultations

Dedicated appointments to assess and manage tinnitus, booked separately from a standard earwax appointment.

What to expect at your appointment

When you arrive, the audiologist will ask about your symptoms and look in both ears with a microscope and a video otoscope before anything is removed. You can watch the screen if you want to see what is there. Wax is then taken out by microsuction, irrigation or manual instruments, depending on what suits your ears on the day.

The ear health check is part of the standard appointment, not an added extra. It includes a hearing screen and a look at the eardrum and middle ear, so if something other than wax is behind the blocked feeling, it is more likely to be picked up. Where it helps, a report with photographs of your ear canal can be sent to your GP.

To soften the wax beforehand, use olive oil drops for up to three days before you come in. The clinic is on Rodney Street, in Liverpool's Georgian Quarter. The entrance has a step, so a portable ramp is used for wheelchair access - let reception know in advance so it is ready when you arrive.

Frequently asked questions about this clinic

Does the Liverpool clinic offer same-day earwax appointments?

Same-day appointments are often available, though it depends on the day. Call to check what is free before you travel.

How do I get to the Rodney Street clinic?

The clinic is about ten minutes' walk from Liverpool Central Station. There is meter parking on the street outside, and the Anglican Cathedral car park is about five minutes away.

What is included with an earwax appointment beyond the wax removal?

Every appointment includes an ear health check as standard - a hearing screen and an examination of the eardrum and middle ear using a microscope and a video otoscope. If anything beyond wax needs following up, a report with ear-canal photographs can be sent to your GP.

Is the clinic accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes. The entrance has a step, so a portable ramp is used for wheelchair access. Let reception know in advance so it is ready when you arrive.

Can children be seen at the Rodney Street clinic?

Appointments here are for adults aged 19 and over. For a younger patient, look for a clinic on the directory that lists paediatric ear care.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Use olive oil drops for up to three days before your appointment to soften the wax. There is no need to stop if your ears feel blocked - that is expected.

When to see a doctor first

Earwax removal is not suitable in some situations. If you have any of the following, see your GP before booking an earwax appointment:

  • Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Severe ear pain
  • Discharge or bleeding from the ear
  • Recent ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
  • Dizziness or balance problems alongside the hearing change

These can be signs of something other than wax, and the right next step is medical assessment, not removal.
