HCPC BSHAA BAA

Microsuction with surgical loupes or an endoscope, ENT microscope microsuction, and water irrigation. Also a member of the British Society of Audiology.

Hearing Therapy has offered ear care across South and West Yorkshire since 2008, and its Sheffield clinic sits on Sharrow Vale Road. Earwax removal here is carried out by an HCPC registered audiologist and hearing therapist, using microsuction and water irrigation, with the method matched to your ears and the type of wax on the day. Same-day appointments are often available.

Services available at this clinic

Loupe/O-Scope microsuction

Vision-aided suction using surgical loupes or an otoscope. A widely-used technique suitable for most earwax removal.

ENT Microscope microsuction

Vision-aided suction using a binocular microscope, the technique most commonly used in hospital ear departments. High magnification and depth perception, useful when wax is impacted or close to the eardrum.

Water irrigation

Warm water flush using a controlled-pressure pump. Suitable when wax is soft and the eardrum is intact.

Hearing assessments

A hearing test can be arranged where wax is not the cause of a hearing change, or where a check is useful after removal. Charged separately from earwax removal.

What to expect at your appointment

When you arrive, the practitioner asks about your symptoms and any ear history, then examines both ears with an otoscope before deciding how to proceed. If there is wax to remove, it is usually cleared with microsuction or water irrigation, and the choice depends on the wax and the shape of your ear canal.

There is a single charge for earwax removal, whether one ear or both are treated. If the wax cannot be cleared safely and comfortably in one visit, a follow-up is not charged again. If it turns out there is no wax, an assessment fee applies, and a separate hearing test can be arranged if a hearing change needs looking into.

The clinic has step-free access and is suitable for wheelchair users. Patients aged 10 and over are seen. If you have specific access needs, mention them when you book so the team can plan for your visit.

Frequently asked questions about this clinic

Does the Sheffield clinic offer same-day earwax appointments?

Same-day appointments are often available at the Sharrow Vale clinic, though it depends on the day. Call to check what is open before you set off.

Which earwax removal methods does the Sheffield clinic use?

The clinic uses microsuction, with surgical loupes, an otoscope, or an ENT microscope, and water irrigation. The practitioner chooses the method that suits your ears and the type of wax on the day, and can switch during the appointment if needed.

What does earwax removal cost here, and what if it turns out not to be wax?

Earwax removal is £70 for one or both ears, charged once even if a second visit is needed to clear the wax safely. If the problem is not wax, an assessment fee of £30 applies, and a separate hearing test can be arranged if a hearing change needs looking into.

Is there an option for regular earwax care?

Yes. For patients who need frequent treatment, an Ear Care Club membership covers up to eight treatments a year for a monthly fee. Ask about it when you call if you have recurring wax build-up.

Can children be seen at the Sheffield clinic?

The clinic sees patients aged 10 and over. For younger children, speak to your GP or an ENT service about suitable options.

Is the clinic accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes. The clinic has step-free access and is suitable for wheelchair users. Let the team know about any specific access needs when you book so they can plan for your visit.

When to see a doctor first

Earwax removal is not suitable in some situations. If you have any of the following, see your GP before booking an earwax appointment:

  • Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Severe ear pain
  • Discharge or bleeding from the ear
  • Recent ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
  • Dizziness or balance problems alongside the hearing change

These can be signs of something other than wax, and the right next step is medical assessment, not removal.
