Microsuction using surgical loupes or an otoscope, and manual removal with curettes.

All Clear Hearing has offered earwax removal in the Wigan area since 2016, working from a clinic in Shevington on the north-western edge of the town. Appointments are handled by an audiologist and hearing aid dispenser who is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, so the practitioner's training and conduct can be checked on a public register.

The clinic uses microsuction with surgical loupes or an otoscope, alongside manual removal for stubborn wax. If you want to understand what the different registers mean before you book, you can read more about who can remove earwax in the UK.

Services available at this clinic

Loupe/O-Scope microsuction

Vision-aided suction using surgical loupes or an otoscope. A widely-used technique suitable for most earwax removal.

Manual removal (curettes)

Hand instruments such as curettes, fine forceps, or a Jobson Horne probe. Useful for stubborn wax, foreign objects, or patients who prefer not to have suction.

Home visit earwax removal

For patients who cannot easily travel, removal can be carried out at home across the areas this clinic covers - Bolton, Wigan, and Chorley. Call to check availability and any home-visit charge.

Hearing aid consultations and fitting

Private hearing aid advice, fitting, and aftercare. Ask the clinic which options suit your hearing and budget when you call.

What to expect at your appointment

When you arrive, the practitioner will ask about your symptoms and how long your ears have felt blocked, then look inside each ear with magnification before starting. This check decides which method is right on the day. Most appointments take around 20 minutes.

If the wax is soft, microsuction or manual removal is usually straightforward. If it is very hard, you may be asked to use olive oil drops for a few days and come back, so the wax can be removed safely rather than forced. You can ask to see what is taken out if you would like to.

The clinic has step-free access and is suitable for wheelchair users. If you cannot travel to Shevington, ask about a home visit when you call - the practitioner covers Bolton, Wigan, and Chorley.

Frequently asked questions about this clinic

Which earwax removal methods does the Wigan clinic use?

The practitioner uses microsuction with surgical loupes or an otoscope, and manual removal with curettes for stubborn wax. The right method is chosen after looking inside your ear at the start of the appointment.

Can I get a same-day earwax appointment in Wigan?

Often, yes. The clinic is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm and same-day appointments are frequently available, but it is worth calling ahead to confirm a slot.

Does All Clear Hearing offer home visits for earwax removal?

Yes. Home visits can be arranged for patients who cannot easily travel, across Bolton, Wigan, and Chorley. Call to check availability and any home-visit charge.

Can children be seen at the Wigan clinic?

No. This clinic sees adults aged 19 and over. Earwax removal for under-19s outside a school setting requires separate registration that this clinic does not hold.

Is the Wigan clinic accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes. The clinic has step-free access and is suitable for wheelchair users. If you have specific access needs, mention them when you call so the practitioner can plan for your visit.

How should I prepare for my earwax appointment?

If you can, use olive oil drops for one to two days before your appointment to soften the wax. It is not essential - come along anyway if you have not had time, and the practitioner will advise on the day.

When to see a doctor first

Earwax removal is not suitable in some situations. If you have any of the following, see your GP before booking an earwax appointment:

  • Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Severe ear pain
  • Discharge or bleeding from the ear
  • Recent ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
  • Dizziness or balance problems alongside the hearing change

These can be signs of something other than wax, and the right next step is medical assessment, not removal.
