Mr Martin Atkins
Audiologist and hearing aid dispenser
Microsuction with surgical loupes or an otoscope, and manual removal with curettes.
What to expect at your appointment
When you arrive, the practitioner will ask about your symptoms and any relevant ear history, then examine both ears before starting. The clinic has step-free access and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.
If your ears need it, the wax is removed using microsuction or hand instruments, whichever suits the wax on the day. Most appointments are straightforward; if the wax is very hard, you may be asked to soften it with drops and come back.
If you can, use olive oil drops for a day or two before your appointment to soften the wax, though it is not essential. You can ask to see what is removed if you would like to.

When to see a doctor first
Earwax removal is not suitable in some situations. If you have any of the following, see your GP before booking an earwax appointment:
- Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
- Severe ear pain
- Discharge or bleeding from the ear
- Recent ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
- Dizziness or balance problems alongside the hearing change
These can be signs of something other than wax, and the right next step is medical assessment, not removal.
